I know this firsthand - I have come across the organization of such programs both from retail and from processing enterprises. The main problem is that logistics and disassembly often turn out to be more expensive than the cost of the recyclable materials obtained, especially if we are talking about equipment with a large amount of plastic and mixed materials.
Organizing a gathering is only half the battle. We brought a batch of old televisions and refrigerators to the site. Then comes the fun part: manual disassembly. It is not yet possible to automate it completely - there are too many different models, fasteners, and dangerous components, such as freon in compressors, require careful removal. Therefore, it is economically profitable to recycle only large batches of the same type of plastic, which are difficult to collect in the flow of assorted equipment from the stock. Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to use it as an alternative fuel in cement plants, which, strictly speaking, is not recycling.
When it comes to recycling complex devices like washing machines with their concrete counterweights, or refrigerators with insulating polyurethane foam, a more serious approach is needed. What is needed here is not just a platform with hammers, but a conveyor line with a whole set of units. For example, to extract non-ferrous metals from crushed mass after crushing, it is effective to use magnetic separators. Trucks traveling around the city to pick up large equipment quickly became overloaded, and the schedule was lost. People began to complain about the long wait, and the temporary storage warehouse turned into a landfill. We had to urgently rent additional space and hire movers. Income from the sale of copper, aluminum and high-quality steel covers only part of the costs of logistics, labor-intensive disassembly, rental of space and disposal of non-recyclable residues (the same dirty plastic, rubber, glass). Therefore, the business model is built either on a combination with the sale of new equipment (discount as an incentive), or on government subsidies or environmental fees from manufacturers, or on the inclusion of the cost of disposal in the price of a new product (recycling fee).

Sometimes it is more profitable not to crush everything, but to organize preliminary manual disassembly by several trained workers. They will quickly remove motors, transformers, cables - anything that contains the maximum amount of non-ferrous metal. The remaining cases can now be put under a press or into a shredder. This is less technologically advanced, but for small volumes of shares it can be cost-effective.
The trend that I observe is the tightening of legislation. Soon, perhaps, by simple removal to a landfill under the guiserecyclingyou won't be able to get away with it. Certificates of actual recycling and reporting of material recovery percentages will be required. What do I advise to those who are thinking about organizing such an event? Firstly, immediately look not just for a transport company for export, but for a processing partner. Discuss with him what exactly he is ready to accept, in what form (whole, without doors, with preliminary disassembly), and what fractions he extracts. This will determine the rules of the promotion for consumers. Second, be realistic about the costs. A 10-15% discount on new equipment should cover not only logistics and disposal, but also part of the marketing budget. Thirdly, prepare the infrastructure: a place for temporary storage, trained personnel for reception, possibly a tool for partial disassembly on site.
