
A master metal detector is not just a device with a beep signal. This is a tool on which safety on a construction site, the purity of processed raw materials and the service life of expensive equipment depend. We have tested more than 27 models over the past five years - in cement factories in the Moscow region, on conveyors of Ural foundries, in plastic recycling lines in the Krasnodar Territory. And each time one question arose without exception: “Why does the metal detector miss ferromagnetic inclusions with a diameter of 1.2 mm, but catches aluminum foil?” The answer lies not in sensitivity, but in architecture.
Not the power, not the number of modes, and not the sound volume. A master metal detector is a system where three components work as a single mechanism: a stable electromagnetic coil, an adaptive digital filter, and a mechanical platform that is resistant to vibration and temperature changes. For example, when detecting steel in a crushed stone flow, the signal frequency must shift by 8–12 kHz - otherwise the signal “drowns” in the background noise. For most budget solutions, this shift is 3–5 kHz. Result: false alarms when passing large stones or missing small bolts.
We measured the reaction time on samples made of AISI 304 stainless steel weighing 0.8 g. The market average is 420 ms. The best solutions fit within 95–110 ms. It is this difference that determines whether the metal detector will stop the belt before the harmful inclusion enters the crusher - or after.
Important: there is no “universal” mode. The leading metal detector supports a minimum of three profile settings - for ferrous metals, non-ferrous alloys and stainless steels. Each of them adjusts not only the response threshold, but also the bandwidth, the depth of signal analysis and the delay time of interference suppression. Without this, there is constant manual calibration and an increase in defects.
The most common mistake is installing a metal detector in the area of electromagnetic influence of other devices. We have seen cases where the conveyor power transformer created background noise of 18-22 Hz. The device “did not see” it, but distorted the phase of the main signal. Result: 37% omissions when tested on a standard GOST R set.
The second reason is the incorrect mounting height above the tape. At a distance of more than 28 cm from the top surface of the conveyor, sensitivity to stainless steel drops by 44%. If less than 12 cm, the risk of mechanical damage to the coil from impacts from large pieces increases. The optimal range is 16–22 cm. It is easy to check: if, when you turn on the self-diagnosis mode, the stability indicator does not light up solid green, then the height has gone beyond the limits.
The third is the lack of regular calibration checks. Even under ideal conditions, the temperature drift of the coil reaches 0.3% per day. We recommend carrying out a control check every 8 hours of operation. For this, three standards are sufficient: a steel ball Ø1.0 mm, an aluminum disk Ø2.5 mm and a stainless cylinder Ø1.6 mm. If one of them does not trigger, reconfiguration is required.
The price of a leading metal detector starts from rubles. But the real cost is the sum of costs per year of operation:
In practice, savings at the start turn into cost overruns of 42–68% over three years. Especially when it comes to the production of building mixtures, where the permissible content of metallic inclusions is no more than 0.003 g/kg.
The next generation of leading metal detectors is already working in Russia: they analyze not only the presence of metal, but also its shape, orientation and speed of movement. Such systems are able to distinguish a rivet from shavings, and a nut from a random fragment. They automatically adjust the threshold depending on the density of the material on the belt - for example, they reduce sensitivity when passing wet sand and increase it when passing dry gravel.
