
A cheap concentric eddy current separator is not a marketing gimmick, but a technical reality for processing enterprises, where every thousand rubles of capital costs must be recouped in 14–18 months. We tested this at three factories: two in the Sverdlovsk region, one in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. In all cases, the separator replaced a two-stage system of magnetic drum and manual sorting. The effect manifested itself 72 hours after start-up: the purity of the “substandard” fraction increased from 68% to 94.2%, and labor costs for control decreased by 3.7 man-hours per shift.
A concentric eddy current separator operates on the principle of induced current in conductive particles as they move in an alternating magnetic field. But the key thing is not the effect itself, but its implementation. Cheap analogues often have one winding, one frequency range (50–60 Hz), and rigid fixation of the gap between the rotor and stator. The result is overheating at loads above 8 t/h, drift of the separation threshold ±12%, and inability to work with humidity above 8%. We saw how such installations “turned off” in July in Orenburg - due to overheating of the coils at +36 °C in the workshop.
LONGI Corporation models have a three-winding system with independent control of each zone: pre-induction, main separation, final cleaning. Frequency range - from 30 to 250 Hz, regulated by a digital PID controller. The gap between the elements is not fixed, but compensated by thermocouples. First. A customer from Rostov-on-Don chose the cheapest separator without taking into account the composition of the raw materials. Its secondary aluminum contained up to 18% Al-Si and Al-Mg alloys. The installation did not recognize them as conductive and released particles with high resistance into the “clean” fraction. I had to change to a model with an extended calibration table - it takes into account 11 types of alloys and automatically adjusts the field strength.
Second. At a plant in Tatarstan they tried to use a separator for crushed glass with aluminum foil residues. Without preliminary screening by 3 mm, the system clogged in 4.5 hours. The real solution is not “cheaper”, but “smarter”: a built-in vibrating feeder with adjustable amplitude and a clogging sensor in the loading tray.
Third. The customer demanded “everything in one package.” I received a separator without service access to the windings. After 11 months, one section failed. The repair took 19 days. It is justified if you process non-ferrous metals in a volume of 5 to 12 tons/day, do not need integration with MES or SCADA, and the main goal is to reduce defects in finished products and reduce the load on operators. It is not justified if you have a flow of 30 t/h, 99.9% purity of the fraction is required, or the raw material contains a mixture of copper, zinc and titanium in a 1:1:1 ratio. There you need a multi-frequency separator with selective filtering.
