Cheap wet drum separator for recovery of heavy media

A cheap wet drum separator for the recovery of heavy media is not a marketing phrase, but a technical necessity at processing plants processing ores with a density of 4.2–7.8 g/cm³. We have seen customers lose up to 18% of valuable components when using outdated magnetic separators or gravity tables. The problem is not the quality of the ore - it is the discrepancy between the equipment and the density range. A wet drum separator solves this directly: it operates in an aqueous environment, creates a stable hydrodynamic field and separates particles by specific gravity, and not by magnetization.

Why “cheap” is not a synonym for “unreliable”

The cost of a wet drum separator is often associated with compromises: thin-walled housings, simplified bearing units, lack of adjustment of the gap between the drum and the hopper. But in real-world operating conditions, it is these compromises that lead to an increase in TCO (total cost of ownership). Over three years of observations, we have recorded: for cheap models without continuously adjustable clearance, the drum service life is reduced by 40%, and the frequency of replacing rubber seals increases by 2.7 times.

LONGI Corporation is initially designing the “low-cost wet drum separator for heavy media recovery” as a system with a design life of 12,000 hours of continuous operation. Key decisions:

  • Drum made of 304 steel with laser welded seams - does not allow deformation at loads up to 3.5 t/h;
  • Gap adjustment from 1 to 8 mm manually, without tools - accuracy ±0.2 mm;
  • Drum tilt angle 5°–12° – adapts to pulp viscosity (from 25 to 65% solids);
  • Geared motor with reduced torque (0.8–1.2 kNm) - reduces energy consumption by 22% compared to analogues.

The price is lower because redundant functions are excluded: no digital interface, no Wi-Fi module, no automatic lubrication. Everything you need for stable recovery of heavy media is there. The rest is superfluous.

Where it really pays off: three proven scenarios

We do not recommend this separator “for everyone”. It is effective only where separation density is the main parameter. Here are the cases where it works better than expensive analogues:

  1. Processing of ferruginous quartzites: with a Fe₃O₄ content of 28–35%, with an admixture of hematite and siderite. The separator removes large dense inclusions (ρ > 5.2 g/cm³) without requiring preliminary magnetization. The concentrate yield increases by 9–11%.
  2. Recovery of titanomagnetite sands: after screening and classification. Here the stability of the pulp flow is critical. The drum with internal blades ensures uniform distribution even with feed variations of ±15%.
  3. Purification of sludge from heavy metals: When recycling water in RAS or e-waste recycling plants. The separator retains particles of Pb, Sn, Cu with a size of 0.15 mm - without chemical reagents and without filters.

If your task is separation by magnetic susceptibility or working with fine classes (<0.074 mm), this device will not work. It does not replace IUDs or high-gradient separators. It does one thing - clearly, reliably, inexpensively: it separates the heavy from the light in the aquatic environment.

What you need to start - and what to be afraid of

Installation takes 1–2 days. Minimum requirements:

  • Supply voltage: 380 V, 50 Hz, three-phase;
  • Water pressure: 0.2–0.4 MPa, flow rate: 8–12 m³/h;
  • Pulp lifting height: up to 1.8 m (without pump);
  • Foundation: concrete slab ≥200 mm thick.

The main risk is an uncontrolled change in pulp density. If the solids content drops below 22%, heavy particles leak into the tailings. The solution is simple: install a density sensor in the supply line and connect it to a manual water flow control valve. This will add RUB 12,000 to the cost, but will save RUB 370,000 per year in lost concentrate.

Fastening drawings, setting tables for specific ores, and commissioning videos are available on the ljmagnet.ru website. No “free consultations” - only technical answers to specific questions: “What is the gap with a feed of 4.2 t/h?”, “What is the speed of the drum at a density of 6.1 g/cm³?”, “Where can I get spare blades?”

Conclusion: price is not the first, but the last figure in the calculation

A cheap wet drum separator for the recovery of heavy media is not a product that “you can buy cheap and then repair.” This is a solution designed for the specific physics of the process: density, viscosity, granulometry, volume. Its savings lie in avoiding excessive automation, not in robustness, accuracy, or maintainability.

If your goal is to consistently produce concentrate with a density above 5.0 g/cm³ at minimal capital cost, this separator works from day one. It does not require operator training, does not break when overloaded, and does not require expensive service. He just does his job - and does it well.
