Why “cheap” often turns into “expensive” - and how to avoid it

In 2022, we were contacted by a recycling workshop in Krasnoyarsk: a separator worth 1.4 million rubles after 4 months produced 67% of residual iron defects. Cause? The installation operated at 92% of the nominal value - without taking into account the temperature drift of magnetic induction. In real conditions, the field dropped from 120 to 83 mT.   • The load does not exceed 75% of the rated capacity;
  • The material is dry and does not contain abrasive inclusions (for example, quartz sand with a fraction<0.1 mm);
  • Switching frequency - no more than 3 times per minute;
  • Features a grounded metal frame and ±10% surge protection.

How to choose - without marketing traps

Customers often ask: “Why does your LJM-EMF-800 cost 12% more than its analogue, but the declared induction is the same - 110 mT?” The answer is in three numbers, which are almost never indicated in catalogues:

  1. Field penetration depth- LONGI has 185 mm (with a layer thickness of 120 mm), the competitor has 132 mm. It's the difference between removing a nail from crushed stone and missing a rivet;
  2. Induction decay rate when heated— 0.12%/°C versus 0.38%/°C. The difference is 3.2 times at +50°C;
  3. Winding insulation life- class H (180°C) instead of class F (155°C). This is +4 years of service in a workshop with a high thermal load.

We do not offer a "universal" separator. The choice begins not with the price, but with the analysis of the test material: we make a magnetogram for free and select the optimal design. Because a cheap electromagnetic separator is one that does not require replacement after 11 months.

What “low” prices hide - and what conditions are really important

Some suppliers advertise a “low price” due to savings on things that the client will notice only after six months: thin copper wire instead of Litz wire, no temperature sensors in the winding, a basic controller without emergency shutdown logic. We encountered this ourselves: in 2020, one of our partners supplied a separator with a simplified cooling system. After 5 months - open circuit, short circuit, shop downtime for 3 days. The losses exceeded the difference in price by 7 times.

Therefore, LONGI has strict internal standards:

  • Mandatory thermocouple in each winding section;
  • Automatic current reduction when exceeding +65°C;
  • Checking the tightness of the housing under a pressure of 0.15 MPa;
  • Bench tests for 8 hours under 100% load.

This increases the cost by 9-11%, but reduces warranty cases by 83%. And yes - this makes the equipment available not “immediately”, but “reliably”.

Cheap electromagnetic separator - when it is justified

It is justified - and beneficial - in three cases:

  1. For pre-cleaning: before the crusher, absorbing lines, at the stage of receiving raw materials. Maximum induction is not needed here - 70–90 mT is enough at a moderate flow rate;
  2. In regions with a low level of operational culture: where it is difficult to ensure regular maintenance, then simplicity of design and maintainability are more important;
  3. With a limited budget to start the project: but with a clear modernization plan in 2-3 years. For example, start with LJM-EMF-600, and then add a field enhancement module and a remote monitoring system.
